The FDA authorized 20 ZYN nicotine pouch products for sale in the US, all at 3 mg or 6 mg. And it was explicit that this does not make them "FDA approved" or safe. That gap between "authorized" and "approved" is where most of the headlines, and most of the doctors' objections, come from.
A marketing order for ZYN, not a stamp of approval
The order came through the premarket tobacco product application process run by the FDA Center for Tobacco Products. It means those specific ZYN products can legally be sold in the US. It covers named flavors such as Cool Mint, Wintergreen and Spearmint at 3 mg and 6 mg. It doesn't cover every ZYN product, and it doesn't cover any other brand.
A marketing order is also not a modified-risk order. That's a separate FDA process, and it's the one a product has to go through before its maker can advertise it as lower risk than cigarettes. Seeing ZYN on a shelf legally doesn't mean the can is allowed to make health claims.
On our scale, Light covers the 3 mg versions and Medium covers the 6 mg ones. The full ZYN range lists the mg on every can.
What the objections actually are
Mostly young people. The worry is that teenagers hear "FDA" and assume harmless. The CDC's tobacco pages are blunt that nicotine is addictive and can harm the developing adolescent brain, and the FDA itself said the authorized products aren't meant for young people or for anyone who doesn't already use nicotine.
The second objection is about language. "Authorized" sounds a lot like "approved" to most people, and critics expect the two to get mixed up in conversation and in marketing. The FDA's own wording rules that reading out.
Does the order change anything about the pouch you use?
No. A 6 mg ZYN pouch has the same nicotine it had before. The order is about whether a product can be sold in the US, not about what's inside it. Brands outside the order, like Velo, aren't covered by it, and that tells you nothing about their contents either way.
Getting pouches to a US address
US orders go by PostNord and take 3-5 days. Shipping starts from €7.99 and is free from €150. There's a hard cap of 60 cans per parcel so it stays under 2 kg. If you want more than that, it has to go as a separate order.
This product contains nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive substance.
